Nació el 26 de diciembre de 1904, en La Habana (Cuba). Cursó parte de sus estudios iniciales en su ciudad natal, y con doce años, se trasladó a París donde asistió al liceo de Jeanson de Sailly, y se inició en los estudios musicales con su madre, desarrollando una intensa vocación musical. Al regrear a su país, inició los estudios de arquitectura, ya que su padre era arquitecto, pero no finalizaría la carrera.

Eftersom faderen var fransk, fik han sin uddannelse på franske skoler. Samtidig fik han uddannelse i musik af moderen, der var højtuddannet cubaner. Under sine rejser til Cuba arbejdede han som journalist, men måtte ved flere lejligheder gå i eksil. Han rejste i Mexico og Haiti, hvor han interesserede sig for slaveoprørene i det 18. århundrede. Han boede i Caracas i 1945-58, hvor han vendte tilbage til Cuba kort før revolutionen. Han havde en lang række diplomatiske opgaver for den nye revolutionære regering og døde i Frankrig, hvor han var cubansk ambassadør.

De regreso a Cuba consiguió un trabajo en la radio, hasta que, después de viajar a distintos países de América, se estableció en Venezuela en 1945. En 1959 regresó a Cuba, donde dirigió la Editora Nacional. Desde fines de 1966 residió en París, donde ejerció un importante cargo diplomático, hasta su muerte, en 1980.

Cuban novelist and musicologist. As a political exile in Paris between 1928 and 1939, Carpentier was strongly influenced by Antonin Artaud, Jacques Prévert, and the surrealists. Reflecting his deep commitment to revolutionary politics, his novels explore the irrational elements of the Latin American world, its rich variety of cultures, and the possibility of its magical transformation. Widely regarded as one of the greatest modern Latin American writers, Carpentier was also important as a theorist of the region’s literature and historian of its music.
