Il est né en 1943 à Kilwa (province de Lindi), sur la côte sud de la Tanzanie, où son père fait du commerce et enseigne le coran. Ebrahim Hussein est encore étudiant quand sa pièce, Kinjeketile est jouée en 1969 et publiée en 1970. Sombre méditation sur le pouvoir et la révolution, elle est devenu la pièce tanzanienne la plus célèbre.
