Desde su juventud participу intensamente en la vida cultural y polнtica cubana, lo que le costу el exilio en varias ocasiones. Ingresу en el Partido Comunista en 1937, y tras el triunfo de la Revoluciуn cubana en 1959 desempeсу cargos y misiones diplomбticas de relieve.

Cuban poet. A leading exponent of poesia negra—an Afro-Antillean genre developed in the Caribbean—Guillйn writes poetry charged with intense racial and political feelings. In Motivos de son (1930) and Sуngoro cosongo (1931) he employed native incantations, dances, and street cries. Guillйn’s later poetry, more traditional in form, is devoted to social and economic problems. It includes Balada (1962), Antologнa mayor (1964), and El gran zoo (1967, tr. 1972).

One of Cuba's foremost poets. Wrote in many styles, many of which are traceable to the litterary styles in use in the old Oyo Empire, the Yoruba homeland, according to Olabiyi Yai, now Benin's ambassador to UNESCO and a Guillйn scholar. Another Guillйn scholar is Keith Ellis at the University of Toronto, who has written extensively on him.

Nicolбs Guillйn, nй а Camargьey en 1904, est le grand nom de la poйsie cubaine au vingtiиme siиcle. Issu d'un milieu ouvrier, il fit des йtudes de droit et devint avocat avant de se tourner vers le journalisme en fondant, en 1923, la revue Lirio.
