The Thomistic Philosophy Home Page - English
URL: http://members.aol.com/jmageema/index.html

Thomistic Philosophy is inspired by the philosophical methods and principles used by Thomas Aquinas (1224/5-1274), a Dominican Friar and Theologian, in his explanation of the Catholic faith. Aquinas, who is most renowned for his Five Ways of Proving the Existence of God, believed that both faith and reason discover truth, a conflict between them being impossible since they both originate in God. Believing that reason can, in principle, lead the mind to God, Aquinas defended reason's legitimacy, especially in the works of Aristotle. The Italian family of Aquino traced its ancestry back to the Lombard kings and was linked with several of the royal houses of Europe. Landulph, father of Thomas Aquinas, held the titles of Count of Aquino and Lord of Loreto, Acerro, and Belcastro; he was nephew of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and also connected to the family of King Louis IX of France, whose life precedes this; his wife, Theodora, Countess of Teano, was descended from the Norman barons who had conquered Sicily some two centuries earlier.

Every American, indeed every Westerner, whether Catholic or not, lives in a world that has been greatly changed by the work of Saint Thomas Aquinas. During his childhood, his little sister was killed by a bolt of lightening, while Thomas was sleeping in the same room. He was fearful of storms and lightening the rest of his life, and today is a patron against thunderstorms and sudden death.

The Resurrection of Thomism - English

By Doug Erlandson. At the heart of the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas lies his natural theology. The linchpin of that theology is his Five Ways--his arguments for the existence of God. The presupposition behind all this is the belief that God's existence can be demonstrated on theologically neutral grounds. If God's existence cannot be demonstrated, then neither can His attributes. It is no accident that Aquinas' arguments for God's existence precede his discussion of God's attributes. [1] Without the former, his demonstration of the latter would be impossible.

Thomas Aquinas, Priest, Friar, and Theologian - English

shown in filters: Personalia

In the thirteenth century, when Thomas Aquinas lived, the works of Aristotle, largely forgotten in Western Europe, began to be available again, partly from Eastern European sources and partly from Moslem Arab sources in Africa and Spain. These works offered a new and exciting way of looking at the world. Many enthusiastic students of Aristotle adopted him quite frankly as as an alternative to Christianity.
