Chrysophyta , phylum (division) of unicellular marine or freshwater organisms of the kingdom Protista consisting of the diatoms (class Bacillariophyceae), the golden, or golden-brown, algae (class Chrysophyceae), and the yellow-green algae (class Xanthophyceae). In many chrysophytes the cell walls are composed of cellulose with large quantities of silica.

Chrysophytes are photosynthetic, unicellular organisms that are abundant in freshwater and marine environments. Chrysophytes contain chlorophylls a and c, which are masked by the accessory pigment fucoxanthin, a carotenoid. In many ways, golden algae are, biochemically and structurally similar to brown algae. Both golden algae and brown algae store food outside of the chloroplast in the form of polysaccharide laminarin, or chrysolaminarin. In both groups, motile cells have unequal flagella of similar structure.

Zu den Chrysophyta werden Algen gerechnet, die sich durch eine Reihe elektronenmikroskopisch erkennbarer Gemeinsamkeiten auszeichnen. Ein wesentliches Kennzeichen ist eine Falte des Endoplasmatischen Retikulums, die die Plastiden umgibt, sowie die Anordnung der Thylakoide in Dreierstapeln. In der Regel sind zwei unterschiedlich lange Geißeln vorhanden, von denen die längere, nach vorn gerichtete, mit steifen Flimmerhaaren (Mastigonemen) besetzt ist. Zur Pigmentausstattung gehören die Chlorophylle a und c und, mengenmäßig überwiegend, Carotinoide, welche die grüne Chlorophyllfarbe überdecken. Auffallend ist das Fucoxanthin, das den Plastiden vieler Arten eine goldbraune Farbe verleiht.
