Capek, Karel - English

Czech playwright, novelist, and essayist. He is best known as the author of two brilliant satirical plays—R. U. R. (Rossum's Universal Robots; 1921, tr. 1923), which introduced the word robot into the English language, and The Insect Play, written with his brother Josef (1921, tr., 1923). These plays embody Capek's criticism of technological and materialistic excesses. Of his other plays The Makropoulos Secret (1923, tr. 1925) satirizes man's search for immortality and his yearning for titanistic greatness.

Capek's R.U.R. Excerpt - English
URL: http://www.u.arizona.edu/~gmcmilla/capek.html

When Karel Capek took up the theme of androids, the creation of human-like robots, most of what he wrote was sheer fantasy or what was soon to be called science fiction. Gene splicing and silicon microchips were decades in the future. The few examples of automation circa 1920 look small and primitive, indeed, by today's standards.

Karel Capek - English

Czech novelist, short-story writer, political thinker, playwright, and teacher. Capek's play R.U.R.: Rossum's Universal Robots (1920) added to Oxford English Dictionary a new word, "robot." It was derived from the Czech "robota", meaning someting like "work" or "serf", "forced labor", referring originally to dull work (see Maxfield & Montrose Interactive). Capek's robots were not mechanical but humanlike beings of organic origin - now they would be called androids. The term was later applied to machines. Along with Kafka and Jaroslav Hasek, the author of The Good Soldier Svejk, Capek is among the great figures of modern Czech literature.

Karel Capek - English
URL: http://cscs.umich.edu/~crshalizi/notebooks/capek.html

Capek (the C should have a convex-down bow above it, and the name is pronounced, I am told, something like ``Chop-ek'') was a Czech writer and man of letters. Between the wars he was very widely read and well known, and actually he deserved to be; some of his admirers have said that the main reason he never got a Nobel Prize for Literature is that the Swedes thought it would offend Hitler too much to give it to such a well-known anti-fascist, and a Czech one at that; according to his widow, the Academy told him they'd give him the prize if only he wrote something blandly inoffensive for them to pin it on, to which he retorted that he'd already submitted his doctoral dissertation --- se non и vero, и bene trovato, and totally characteristic.

Karel Иapek (1890-1938) is generally considered the greatest Czech author of the first half of this century. He was Czechoslovakia's leading novelist, playwright, story writer, and columnist, and the spirit of its short-lived democracy. His plays appeared on Broadway soon after their debut in Prague, and his books were translated into many languages. Иapek expressed himself in the form of accessible and highly enjoyable writing.
