1254?–1324?, Venetian traveler in China. His father, Niccolт Polo, and his uncle, Maffeo Polo, had made (1253–60) a trading expedition to Constantinople. A war blocked their return, and they journeyed eastward to reach Kublai Khan's eastern capital at Kaifeng in 1266. They returned to Venice in 1269, and in 1271 they left with Marco for Kublai's court. The party reached Cambuluc (modern Beijing) in 1275.

Marco Polo came into the world in 1254. His father, the explorer Nicolo Polo, had left Marco's mother when she was pregnant. Marco lived in a city called Venice. It wasn't the best place for growing up. By the time Marco's father returned, Marco was 14 years old! When his father decided to go on another exploration, he agreed to take Marco with him.

His journey through Asia lasted 24 years. He reached further than any of his predecessors, beyond Mongolia to China. He became a confidant of Kublai Khan (1214-1294). He traveled the whole of China and returned to tell the tale, which became the greatest travelogue.
