Zoology projects - schistosomes - English
URL: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/science/intro/zoology/project3/index.html

Schistosomes are small flukes which live in the bloodstream of infected people, mainly children. Parasite eggs, passed in urine or faeces, hatch in contact with water to release free-swimming larvae which actively seek out and penetrate a particular kind of freshwater snail. After a period of multiplication within the snail, the parasites emerge and infect humans or other mammalian hosts by direct penetration through the skin.

Zoological Institute Laboratory of Parasitic Worms - English
URL: http://www.zin.ru/labs/worms_e.htm

shown in filters: Organizations

The Laboratory studies the systematics, phylogeny, and zoogeography of various groups of parasitic worms, and the use of parasitological data for the reconstruction of the formation of the parasitofauna of various host groups. These studies focus on monogeneans, cestodes of birds, trematodes of bats, udonellids, phytonematodes, parasites of fishes, and helminths of insectivores. In the past few years, the Laboratory has been involved in creating computer generated data bases for use in research. Recently, a data base on the cestode collection has been completed. The Laboratory's collection includes tens of thousands of specimens and is regularly enriched with material from expeditions to different parts of Russia and to countries abroad. T. A. Timofeeva is the Curator of the Laboratory's collections.

Ancestral Flatworms - English
URL: http://www.historyoftheuniverse.com/earlflat.html

arly forms of jellyfish seem to have evolved into various different kinds of worms, one of which was the ancestor of flatworms. They, in turn, probably evolved into higher animals. Ancestral flatworms may have first appeared around 570 million years ago. Here we see the basic plan laid out for the structure of the body which would be used and modified by all later groups of animals.

Phylum Platyhelminthes - English
URL: http://www.sidwell.edu/us/science/vlb5/Labs/Classification_Lab/Eukarya/Animalia/

The phylum Platyhelminthes represents all flatworms in the kingdom Animalia. Flatworms are relatively primitive animals that represent an early lineage in the kingdom. Unlike the even more primitive phylum cnidaria, all flatworms of the phylum Platyhelminthes are bilaterally symmetrical, having an anterior, posterior, dorsal, and ventral end and two seemingly identical lateral surfaces. However, flatworms are the only type of bilaterally symmetrical animal that lacks any type of body cavity, a fluid filled space between the digestive tract and the body wall. In the flatworms, this area is filled with tissue.
