Il nous reste peu d'éléments biographiques au sujet de cette poétesse et mystique flamande qui fait un peu figure d'exception dans notre inventaire majoritairement masculin. Il y a tout lieu de croire qu'elle était d'origine aristocratique et fut selon certains béguine à Nivelles. Son œuvre probablement composée entre 1220 et 1240 comprend 45 poésies strophiques, 29 poésies d'origine courtoise, 31 lettres et 13 visions augmentées d'une Liste des parfaits amants qui compte 107 noms dont 57 de ses contemporains.

You will want to read the biographical material on Hadewijch in Petroff's Medieval Women's Visionary Literature as a starting point. After that, it may be most useful to familiarize yourself with the contemporary courtly love literary tradition which Hadewijch drew upon. Just as it was necessary to read the biblical Song of Songs in order to understand Bernard and Richard, it is necessary to read in the courtly love tradition to understand Hadewijch. One of the things you will want to be looking for is how the love tradition Hadewijch draws upon (secular rather than "religious") affects her own mystical understanding and mystical expression. Is her love really of a "different kind" than that of Bernard? You may want to think particularly about how Hadewijch's poems compare to Bernard's sermons.

Het leven van de dichteres en mystica Hadewijch was gewijd aan de liefde van en voor God. Uit haar Strofische Gedichten, die op deze pagina verzameld zijn, spreekt een grote liefde (minne) voor hem. Naar vorm en inhoud zijn deze gedichten wel vergeleken met de Zuidfranse liefdeslyriek uit de twaalfde en dertiende eeuw. Sommige gedichten zijn ook zonder problemen als liefdegedichten te lezen. Maar haar voorwerp van liefde was geen aardse minnaar of minnares, maar God.
