Miriam Tlali was born in Johannesburg, in 1933. After the death of her father,Tlali was brought up by her mother, who fostered in her a love of reading and writing. Tlali's father, a teacher, had left her a small collection of books. As a Black South African woman, Miriam Tlali encountered most of the difficulties faced by her fellow Black South Africans. Enrolling at Witwatersrand University, in Johannesburg, to pursue a tertiary education, Tlali was forced to withdraw when it closed its doors to Black people. She then moved to neighbouring Lesotho, where for a while she pursued her studies in medicine.
