Joe Coleman de Graft was born in Cape Coast, Ghana, on April 2, 1924, to a well-off family. His father, Joseph, was a merchant, and his mother, Janet Acquaye, was a homemaker. Joe received his early education at Mfantsipim School (1939-1943), followed by time at Achimota College (1944-1946) and the University College of the Gold Coast (1950-1953), from which he was among the first graduates. In 1953, he married Leone Buckle, a Ghanian accountant from Osu, Accra. Their union produced three children: Carol, Joseph and Dave.
