Clarice Lispector was born in Tchetchelnik in the Ukraine, in 1920, and her family moved to Brazil soon afterwards. She lived her childhood in Maceió and in Recife, in the Northeast of Brazil, and later moved to Rio de Janeiro. As an adult, she traveled extensively, but her final place of residence was the city of Rio de Janeiro, whose energies, one might say, appear in some of her works, and shape some unforgettable passages (see especially the contrast between immense poverty and inexplicable wealth in her story "A bela e a fera," for instance). She died in Rio de Janeiro in 1977.
