Verão de 41 em Itaparica. Os turistas abanam-se nas portas dos hotéis, crianças brincam na praia e os homens, esquecidos dos negócios, perambulam pelas ruas estreitas com seus ternos de panamá branco e o jornal na mão. As notícias não eram muito agradáveis: o Eixo Berlim-Roma dominava as manchetes. A marinha britânica capturava o navio francês Mendonza que navegava em águas territoriais brasileiras. Podia-se olhar a Ilha do Medo, em frente à praia, e pensar se submarinos alemães iriam desembarcar ali. Mas, na casa dos Ribeiro, a alegria era imensa. Era 23 de janeiro e nascia um menino. "Mais um João que poderia correr livre nas areias de Itaparica".

Sein groteskes Unterfangen beendet er weder als das Auto, indem er zusammen mit seinem Fahrer Amaro den Gefangenen transportierte, auf der Strecke bleibt noch als er von regulären Truppen angegriffen wird. An eine Leine gebunden, verspottet und aufs schlimmste mißhandelt wird der Verschleppte wie ein Tier durch die Hitze und Dürre des Sertão getrieben. In der Hauptstadt angekommen, läuft der Sargento letztendlich ins offene Feuer einer Militäreinheit, die schon auf ihn angesetzt war. Die deutsche Übersetzung des Romans von João Ubaldo Ribeiro, den der Autor schon 1971 geschrieben hat, wurde in diesem Jahr neu aufgelegt.

Brazilian journalist and novelist. His novel Sergeant Getúlio (1971, tr. 1978) narrates the efforts of a mercenary to deliver a prisoner in remote NE Brazil; it is notable for its violence and moral ambiguity. His later fiction includes The Lizard's Smile (1981, tr. 1994) and An Invincible Memory (1984, tr. 1989).

Eleito em 7 de outubro de 1993 para a Cadeira n. 34, na sucessão de Carlos Castello Branco, foi recebido em 8 de junho de 1994, pelo acadêmico Jorge Amado.
