The euglenozoa are a small group of unicellular algae, comprising about 1,600 species. Characteristic of the euglenozoa are disklike mitochondrial cristae, cortical microtubules under the outer layer of the plasma membrane, and paraflagellar rods. Most euglenozoa contain the pigment cytochrome c, and the euglenoids have plastids enclosed in three membranes, similar to chloroplasts. The kinetoplastideans contain a large body of DNA within the mitochondria.
