The family Centropomidae, including the snooks and giant perches, comprises 3 genera and about 22 species. The family is widely distributed in coastal and estuarine waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, and in certain inland areas, mainly in Africa. Snooks are moderate- to large-sized predatory fishes, some reaching two meters in length. Many are important food and sport fish. Centropomis undecimalis is an Atlantic species that commonly occurs in canals and rivers of the southeastern United States coast
