Usually a small tree. Leaves are distinctive: same tree bears leaves with 0, 1 or 2 lobes. Twigs are green. Bark on mature trees is reddish-brown and furrowed. The Lauraceae are nearly all woody trees and shrubs comprising 30 to 50 genera and about 2,000 species. An exception is the vining, leafless, parasitic genus Cassytha.
