Beliefs of the followers of John Wycliffe (1320-1384), English theologian and reformer considered extremely dangerous by the Catholic Church because he translated the Bible into the vernacular, which made the Bible understandable to people like you and me. The movement was brutally and repeatedly put down, although Wycliffe's Bible had many secret admirers among the nobility.

The practice of self-immolation among Hindu widows on the funeral pyre of their husbands. One of the reasons it was encouraged was that when a widow committed suttee, all of her inheritance went to the priesthood. Wealthy Christian widows were required to do something similar in the Middle Ages, and, arguably, the practice persists today with wealthy women "donating" to various Christian organizations.

A form of pantheism taught by Benedict (Baruch) de Spinoza (1632-1677), an Amsterdam Jew who maintained that God is not only the maker but also the original matter of the universe, so that creation was only a development of God. Spinoza's ethical system was a carefully contructed proof which discarded pleasure, wealth, etc in favor of the constant improvement of one's moral character as the highest and most satisfying aim of life.
