Neo-Platonism is a modern term used to designate the period of Platonic philosophy beginning with the work of Plotinus and ending with the closing of the Platonic Academy by the Emperor Justinian in 529 CE. This brand of Platonism, which is often described as 'mystical' or religious in nature, developed outside the mainstream of Academic Platonism.

Neoplatonism, seventeenth century aesthetics and garden design - English
URL: http://www.gardenvisit.com/t/c1s5.html

Seventeenth century aesthetic theory is variously described by art historians and philosophers as 'Rationalist', 'Neoclassical' and 'Neoplatonic' but each of these words has also been given more specific meanings. For example 'Rationalist' is used as a contrast to 'Romantic', 'Neoclassical' to describe the period 1750 to 1850, and 'Neoplatonic' to describe the ideas of the third century philosopher, Plotinus. In this book 'Rationalist' will be used to describe a theory of knowledge which contrasts with empiricism, and 'Neoplatonic' to mean derived from the writings of Plato.
