German-American psychologist, one of the founders of Gestalt psychology with Kurt Koffka. Köhler and his followers have analyzed the nature of gestalts and gestalt-qualities, discovered the perceptual conditions under which they arise and disappear, formulated general "laws" of perception-phenomena, and elaborated neuro-physiological hypotheses to account for them. Köhler's tests with chimpanzees suggested that these animals solved problems by understanding, rather than as a result of a gradual trial-and-error process.

1887–1967, American psychologist, b. Estonia, Ph.D. Univ. of Berlin, 1909. From 1913 to 1920 he was director of a research station on Tenerife, Canary Islands. Later he served as both professor of psychology and director of the Psychology Institute, Berlin.
