Населяют разнообразные ландшафты от пустынь до лиственных лесов, не избегая антропогенных угодий; в горах до 3100 м над уровнем моря. Насекомоядны, охотятся обычно на большой высоте, полет стремительный. В полете издают слабо частотно-модулированные эхолокационные сигналы очень высокой интенсивности. Убежища – пещеры, скальные трещины, обшивка крыш человеческих построек, дупла и т. п. Образуют колонии от нескольких десятков до многих тысяч особей.

The Brazilian free-tailed bat is found throughout California. Mostly absent from high Sierra Nevada (from Tehama to Tulare cos.) and the north coastal region (from Del Norte and Siskiyou cos. to northern Sonoma Co). This species is common in California and may be locally abundant.
