The Ochre-striped Cardinalfish is recognised by its blue eyes and by its colour pattern. This species usually has 3-4 dark spots on the base of the caudal fin and six red-brown stripes on the side of the body, the one behind the eye splits into two branches. The fish in the image do not show the typical colour pattern for this species. They are believed to be a coastal form of the Ochre-striped Cardinalfish.

Yellow-striped cardinalfish, Apogon cyanosoma - English

Less than an inch long, this tiny yellow-striped cardinalfish was photographed during a night dive against a backdrop of transparent tunicates (also known as sea squirts). Close observation of the photo reveals a type of parasitic copepod attached to the flesh of this fish near the tail.

The Dhofar cardinalfish Apogon dhofar n. sp. is described from 21 specimens collected in the Arabian Sea, Northwest Indian Ocean off southern Oman. It differs from the very similar A. pseudotaeniatus Gon, 1986 in its higher gill-raker count (12-17 developed rakers vs. 9-11) and coloration.

Cardinalfish belong to the Apogonidae family. The genera of available fish in this group include Apogon, Sphaeramia, and Pterapogon. The average size of most Cardinalfish in captivity is two inches.
