В этом семействе насчитывается всего5 родов и 11 видов, которые, как правило, обитают в прибрежной зоне у дна и встречаются на значительной глубине. Наиболее характерной особенностью рыб-кабанов служит их большая "бронированная" голова с вытянутым рылом, почти полностью покрытая прочными костями, исчерченными глубокими бороздами. Парусные рыбы-кабаны (род Histiopterus) обладают очень высоким спинным плавником, высота которого может превышать высоту тела.
