Die Cichliden kommen hauptsдchlich im afrikanischen Malawisee, dem Tanganjikasee und dem Victoriasee vor. Im Malawisee gibt es ca. 300 bekannte Arten (siehe Liste unten). Diese mьssen sich in einem Zeitraum von etwa 15000 Jahren entwickelt haben, da der See gegen Ende der letzten Eiszeit ausgetrocknet war. Die Ernдhrung der Cichliden reicht von Plankton bis zu kleineren Fischen. Alle Arten haben ihren eigenen Lebensraum, von den Uferzonen bis in die tiefsten Stellen des Sees.

In the wild cichlids live in slow moving or still waters where there are plenty of hiding places, such as shores, heaps of rocks, or dense plant growth. Cichlids are territorial and will regularly defend that territory, especially when mating. Almost all species are predatory with the exception of Geophagus and Tilapia.

This very diverse perciform family consists of about 105 genera and at least 1,300 species (Nelson 1994). Cichlids are widely distributed in Africa and in Central and South America. A few species are also native to India, Syria, Palestine, and Mexico, and to such islands as Cuba, Hispaniola, Madagascar, and Ceylon (Berra 1981; Nelson 1994). The Rio Grande cichlid Cichlasoma cyanoguttatum is the only member of the family native to the United States.
