Aquaristische Hinweise: Im Handel wird er nur noch selten angeboten und meist sind es dann Nachzuchten dieser Art. Von den Bedürfnissen her könnte man A. burtoni als Anfängerfisch betrachten, allerdings ist dieser Cichlide eine Kämpfernatur, was die Pflege und Zucht nicht gerade erleichtert.

Aquaristische Hinweise: Astatotilapia calliptera wird nur sehr selten eingeführt. Im Aquarium ist die Art robust und ausdauernd. Die männlichen Tiere aind untereinander aggressiv. Das Becken sollte eine Mindestgröße ab 200l. haben.

On le rencontre dans les petits cours d'eaux et les marais. Il se nourrit d'invertébrés. Lorsque le mâle va frayer ses couleurs s'accentuer et il devient plus nerveux. Les pontes comptent une soixantaine d'alevins qui sont très petits mais se développent très vite et se reproduisent vers l'âge de trois mois.

Astatotilapia nubila - French

A l'état sauvage Astatotilapia nubila se rencontre dans le lac Victoria dans les eaux peu profondes de l’habitat rocheux et herbeux mais aussi en périphérie de ce lac (lac Edward, lac Georges, lac Kyoga, lac Nabugabo, étendues d’eau diverses). En fait on le rencontre plus souvent dans les petits cours d’eau et dans les marais littoraux. Dans la nature ils se nourrissent d’invertébrés mais restent opportunistes.

A l'état sauvage le latifasciata se rencontre dans un lac périphérique du Victoria, le lac Nawampassa, étendue d’eau très réduite à proximité du Kyoga ou il se nourrit en raclant les algues. J'ai fait l'acquisition de mes premiers spécimens il y a environ deux- trois ans quelques jeunes d'environ cinq centimètres furent placés dans un bac de 240 litres en compagnie de L. caeruleus, L. sp "Hongi", Pseudotropheus saulosi et L.chisumulae. Correctement nourris du mélange maison basé sur crevettes, épinards, moules, paillettes, granulés, ils ne tardèrent pas à frayer dans une eau à 25°C et au pH de 8.

This species has often been considered to resemble the ancestral condition for the endemic Lake Malawi cichlids, or even to be their actual ancestor. It cannot be their ancestor (even apart from the logical impossibility of an ancestral species persisting after it speciates), nor their sister group, because it and its riverine congeners have specializations of the squamation (types and distribution of scales) that are lacking in the Malawi endemics but shared with the Lakes Victoria — Edward — Kivu flock and suggesting that they are the sister group of that flock.
