Dr. Eccles and Dr. Trewavas constructed this genus in 1989. There are seven species in this group from Lake Malawi. These cichlids are preditory and have a color pattern with blotchy camouflage. The name is derived from the Latin word Nimbus, which is a cloud formation associated with rain storms.These cichlids are large and need a lot of room to swim and grow.

Food: Not picky. Will eat a wide variety of foods everything from flake to pellet to live foods(brine shrimp and mosquito larvae). Mine have also eaten Java Moss and will also hunt small fish.

Ce poisson à la belle robe ornée de losanges a été connu sous le nom de H. venustus puis de Cyrtocara venustus. Notre chouchou mesure 20-25 centimètres à l’âge adulte pour le mâle, un peu moins pour la femelle qui elle aussi est assez jolie pour une femelle haplo. Dans le lac c’est un prédateur qui apprécie les jeunes cichlidés en se postant à l’affût sur le sable, en bac il est assez calme et ne s’attaque pas aux adultes et subadultes.

NIMBOCHROMIS POLYSTIGMA - English

Males are very aggressive as is the whole genus and keeping more than one male per tank is to be strongly avoided unless a really big tank is used (more than 1000 liters). The males will spend almost the whole month in peace but when it comes to spawning even the 2,8 m tank is not too big.

It has been observed mimicking a dead fish, lying motionless on its side, on or partly covered by the substrate, and preying on small fish that come to pick at the "carcass".
