Otopharynx lithobates wurde im Handel auch als Haplochromis Sulphur Head bezeichnet. Die Erstbeschreibung erfolgte 1989. O. lithobates frißt von anderen Arten die Ausscheidungen, sie picken Abfälle vom Boden und prüfen sie. Aus diesem Grund sollte das Substrat fein sein, zum Beispiel Sand oder feiner Kies bis 3 mm. Das Aquarium sollte Versteckplätze für die Weibchen bieten, in die sie sich zurückziehen können.

Det var en Malawi det gikk gjeteord om i hobbykretser,og det var denne fisken. Den fantes ikke å få tak i som viltfanget lenger, for den delen av Malawisjøen denne fisken ble fanget i er en del av en større nasjonalpark. Nemlig området rundt Zimbawe Rock.

Otopharynx lithobates Top photos : George Reclos, lower photo : Frank Panis Otopharynx lithobates belongs to the Happies group of Lake Malawi and is a typical Hap. It may grow to 15 cm in the aquarium (females up to 13 cm). Clear sexual dichromatism. The male (see photo) has a blue coloration while the female has a beige color. The fish needs a large tank (180 cm recommended).

Othopharynx lithobates est originaire du sud du lac Malawi notamment à Zimbawe Rocks, Chinyamwezi et Downe. Il y a des variations dans la coloration des mâles en fonction de la localisation géographique. La variété de Zimbawe Rocks est très belle puisque les mâles possèdent une bande jaune de la dorsale à l'extrémité du museau.
