Quisiera empezar diciendo que las condiciones de mantenimiento comentadas más abajo no son en absoluto las descritas normalmente en la bibliografía general sobre acuariofilia dedicadas a este pez y es por ello que no han de tomarse como una regla "tipo" para la reproducción de esta especie sino meramente como una curiosidad.

Comportement: poisson calme. Creuse quelquefois sous les racines ou rochers. Il se comporte très bien avec d'autres éspèces (pour ma part, ils sont restés deux mois avec des M'Bunas).

Pelvicachromis subocellatus er én af 5 videnskabelig beskrevne arter i sin slægt, som alle er hulelegende cichlider. Den er velegnet til selskabsakvarier over 100 liter. P. subocellatus er rimelig aggressive overfor artsfæller og andre mindre cichlider, men er ellers nemme at holde, da det er robuste fisk.

They are definitely a more subtle color form than other P. taeniatus I have seen; In fact, for the first week or so, they showed no color at all. The male was almost white! The female started to relax first; her belly became a dark maroon-purple, and she got almost Krib-like distinct and bold black lateral markings.
