Despite its common name this species is found in the Indo-Pacific, eastern Africa to Hawai'i. P. lacrymatus (Quoy & Gaimard 1825), the Jewel Damsel, Whitespotted Devil. Indo-west Pacific, eastern Africa and Red Sea to the Society Islands.
