Alcanza la madurez sexual a los dos años (machos) o a los tres (hembras). Entre enero y marzo las lubinas se reúnen en grupos numerosos para reproducirse en aguas salobres. Generalmente varios machos fecundan los huevos de una sola hembra. Las lubinas son depredadores típicos y prefieren cazar por la noche. La lubina, junto con la dorada, es la especie mediterránea que más se emplea en piscicultura.
