Basil the Great, bishop and doctor. Born at Caesarea in Cappadocia, circa 330; died there, 1 January 379; [Roman] feast day 2 January†. Basil was born into an old Christian family of wealth and distinction, with a remarkable religious history: his grandmother, Macrina the Elder, his father, Basil the Elder, his mother, Emmelia, his sister, St. Macrina the Younger, and two younger brothers, St. Gregory of Nyssa and Peter of Sebastea, are all numbered among the saints.

ST. BASIL AND ST. GREGORY NAZIANZEN Basil and Gregory were born in Asia Minor in the year 330. This area is modern-day Turkey. Basil's grandmother, father, mother, two brothers and a sister are all saints. Gregory's parents are St. Nonna and St. Gregory the Elder. Basil and Gregory met and became great friends at school in Athens, Greece.

Greek prelate, bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia, Doctor of the Church and one of the Four Fathers of the Greek Church. He was a brother of St. Gregory of Nyssa. In his student days at Athens he knew Julian, later Roman emperor, and began his lifelong friendship with St. Gregory Nazianzen.
