Arab-Israeli Conflict, 20th-century conflict between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East over the land of historic Palestine. The conflict has led to several wars, beginning in 1948, among Arab nations, Palestinian refugees, and the state of Israel. Since 1979 several peace accords have been signed, addressing parts of the conflict.

The 1948-49 war reflected the opposition of the Arab states to the formation of a Jewish state in what they considered Arab territories. A UN-sponsored truce was arranged, but fighting has broken out periodically since then over the basic issue of the existence of Israel.

When Israel achieved its independence on May 14, 1948, the Haganah became the de facto Israeli army. On that day, the country was invaded by the regular forces of Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria. Eleven days later, Israel's provisional government issued an order that provided the legal framework for the country's armed forces. The order established the official name Zvah Haganah Le Yisrael and outlawed the existence of any other military force within Israel.
