Bunyan was born in 1628 near Bedford, in the agricultural midlands of England. He was the son of a tinker (a maker and mender of metal pots). He had little schooling. During the English Civil War, he served in the Parliamentary Army. He underwent a period of acute spiritual anxiety, and finally found peace in a Baptist congregation. He became a lay preacher, while earning his living as a tinker.

by Pastor Mark Montgomery Ambassador Baptist Church. "One of the greatest of all the English Baptists was John Bunyan. He was a great preacher of the gospel, a stalwart defender of the faith, and one of history greatest authors. His life and testimony is worth study because it should prove to be an inspiration to Baptists everywhere."

Bedford is best remembered for its association with John Bunyan, one of the most celebrated writers of the seventeenth century. His book "Pilgrim's Progress" was written in Bedford County Gaol, where he was imprisoned for twelve years for his non-conformist beliefs. The jailed preacher was John Bunyan, later the author of a book that would go through more editions and be translated into more foreign languages than any other piece of English literature. It was of course, The Pilgrim's Progress, an allegory of the Christian's difficult but eventually successful journey to the Celestial City of Heaven. It was based on Bunyan's own pilgrimage in life as a prophet of God.
