On January 20, 1840 Captain Dumont d'Urville was exploring the same seas as the United States Exploring Expedition when he and his crew sighted land about a hundred miles west of the first position reported by Senior Commander Wilkes of the USEE four days before. A landing party went ashore on a small, rock-covered island near the ice cliff and planted the French flag thus assuming possession of the region on January 22.

Né en 1790 en Normandie, France, Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville commence sa carrière comme spécialiste en botanique et en linguistique. Mais, après avoir terminé ses études au Lycée de Caen, il s'engage dans la marine. En 1807, il sert à bord de l'Aquilon, comme novice, puis devient aspirant en 1809 et sert sur l'Amazone. D'Urville est promu lieutenant de vaisseau en 1821.

Jules Sébastien César Dumont d'Urville, born in Normandy, France, in 1790, commenced his career as a specialist in botany and linguistics. However, on terminating his studies at the Lycée de Caen, he joined the Navy. In 1807 he served aboard the "Aquilon" as novice, until on becoming "aspirant" in 1809 he served on the "Amazone" D'Urville was eventually promoted as "Lieutenant de Vasseau" in 1821.

1790–1842, French navigator. While on duty (1819–20) in the E Mediterranean, he saw and recognized the importance of the newly discovered Venus of Milo and was influential in having the Louvre secure it. In 1822–25, while serving on the Coquille, he surveyed the Falklands, Tahiti and other Pacific islands, and New Holland (W Australia). In 1826–29 he commanded the Astrolabe in a voyage around the world; searching for the ill-fated La Pérouse expedition, he explored Fiji and many other islands of Oceania, the New Zealand coast, and the Moluccas.
