Lowry, Clarence Malcolm - French
URL: http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/index.cfm?PgNm=TCE&ArticleId=F0004793

Under the Volcano (trad.

Literary Encyclopedia: Lowry, Malcolm - English
URL: http://www.litencyc.com/php/speople.php?rec=true&UID=2803

Clarence Malcolm was born on 28 July 1909, the youngest of four sons. His father was a prosperous cotton broker and an austere Methodist. The family was addicted to all kinds of outdoor activities; Malcolm himself became a good golf player and a very good swimmer. He seems to have been the black sheep of the family, although his own accounts of his childhood and adolescence vary and seem distorted, making it difficult to assess his relations with his parents and brothers accurately. He spent his first years in Caldy (a community between the estuaries of the Dee and of the Mersey), was sent to a boarding school, then to a public school in Cambridge, The Leys. There he wrote poems and stories for the school magazine, read Conrad, Melville, O'Neill and Jack London, discovered jazz, became a fairly good player of the Hawaiian guitar or ukulele, which he called his taropatch, and became a singer-composer.

English novelist, short story writer, and poet, who is best known for his book UNDER THE VOLCANO (1947), a 20th century classic. Like many of Lowry's publications, the novel is highly autobiographical. Lowry spent his post-Volcano years drinking and planning a cycle of novels built around his masterwork. He lived from 1940 until 1954 in a primitive cabin in Dollarton, British Columbia, and from 1954 until his death in Italy and then England.

English novelist, b. New Brighton, Wirral. Lowry is widely recognized as an important writer who effectively articulated the spiritual desolation of the individual in the 20th cent. While still a student at Cambridge he wrote his first novel, Ultramarine (1933), later reworked and published in final form in 1962. His reputation is founded on his second novel, Under the Volcano (1947), a subtle and complex study of the dissolution of an Englishman's character. Set in Mexico, the novel is highly autobiographical.
