The Dutch Admiral Wybrandt van Warwyck took possession of the island in 1598 and named it Mauritius after Prince Maurice of Nassau, the Stadtholder of Holland. As the Dutch were more interested in trade than in territory, they made no attempt to settle there. 1998 is the 400th anniversary of their first landing on the island.

While Arab and Malay sailors knew of Mauritius as early as the 10th century AD and Portuguese sailors first visited in the 16th century, the island was not colonized until 1638 by the Dutch. Mauritius was populated over the next few centuries by waves of traders, planters and their slaves, indentured laborers, merchants, and artisans.

The first visitors to arrive were the Portuguese. In the course of their travels to the East Indies, they visited the island in 1510, but considered that it was of no immediate commercial interest to them.
