Gairy ultimately led Grenada into independence from Britain in February 1974, and went on to win three elections for the premiership. Among his opponents was the New JEWEL Movement (Joint Endeavor for Welfare, Education and Liberation), a group of mainly young, educated left-wingers led by Maurice Bishop. In the spring of 1979 Gairy was deposed by the NJM. in a bloodless coup.

The Arawaks or Taino, an Amerindian tribe from the Amazon basin first settled Grenada in about the 1st Century A. D. The more war like Caribs, who originated in what is now central Brazil, over ran the more peaceful Arawaks and dominated the island until 150 years after Christopher Columbus first named the island Concepción in 1498.

The French then adapted Granada to Grenade, and the British followed suit, changing Grenade to Grenada (pronounced Gre-nay-da). Although none of the European powers had any trouble naming the island, they found colonization a much more difficult prospect.

The origin of the name "Grenada" is obscure but it is likely that Spanish sailors renamed the island for the city of Granada. By the beginning of the 18th century, the name "Grenada," or "la Grenade" in French, was in common use.
