Mähnenwölfe haben eine charakteristische schwarze Rückenmähne, die steil aufgerichtet werden kann. Der "Aguará Guazu", so wird der Mähnenwolf in Südamerika genannt, ist mit seiner Grösse, seiner rotbraunen Fellfärbung, seinen langen, schwarzen Beinen, der weissen Kehle und Schwanzspitze sowie seiner auffälligen Bewegungsweise sicher einer der schönsten Vertreter der Hundeverwandtschaft. Wie viele auffällige Tiere fand auch er Eingang in die Mythen und Rituale der Menschen. So verwenden die Ureinwohner Südamerikas Fellstücke des Mähnenwolfes als Amulette oder bei religiösen Zeremonien.
