The pike killifish's preferred habitat is along the banks of slow moving streams of mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and reed (Phragmites communis) swamps and around inlets into salty bays (Connaly 1968). Turner and Snelson (1984) found this species reproducing in salinities from 0 to 35 ppt.

The family Poeciliidae includes 30 genera and about 293 species found in the eastern United States south to South America, and in Africa (Nelson 1994). Some 12 species are native to the United States (Page and Burr 1991). Poeciliids are small fishes; most species are less than 10 cm long. They closely resemble killifish and topminnows, but males of the live-bearing poeciliids have elongated anterior anal fin rays that are used for internal fertilization.
