Description of Eschrichtius robustus (Gray Whale). The gray whale's present range is limited to the eastern North Pacific Ocean. Another population existed in the western North Pacific, but is now extinct. Historical documents and skeletal remains also show that gray whales formerly lived in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The gray whale occurs in coastal waters from the Sea of Okhotsk to southern Korea and Japan and from Chukchi and Beaufort Seas to the Gulf of Mexico. The gray whale has also been seen in the North Atlantic Ocean, as well as in the Artic Ocean.

The Gray Whale is among the best known of the large whales, because it is a shore frequenting species that makes an annual migration along some of the most highly populated coasts in the world. This migration, from the Bering and Chukchi Seas between Alaska and Siberia to the warm lagoons of Baja California and western Mexico constitutes a 10,000 to 12,000 mile round trip -- the longest known migration of any mammal!
