The sperm whale possesses the largest brain we may ever know. And how bizarre that no human being has ever tried to make personal contact with the animal. In fact, the only way human beings have related to this species historically is to slaughter it at every turn. Contemporary science can tell us little about this whale beyond the size and weight of its various internal organs. For instance we know this ceatacean's brain can weigh an astounding seventeen pounds. [ eng ] |

Large males attain a length of 20 m and weigh as much as 50 tons. They range across most of the world’s oceans, but they are most usually found in those latitudes inhabited by the giant squid which is their favourite source of prey. The whale sometimes descends to depths of 900 m in search of these creatures who themselves measure over 9 m from tip to tip of their tentacles.

The sperm whale, Physeter catodon, is the largest-toothed animal alive today. Some grow as large as sixty-two feet in length and weigh 50 tons. While larger whales, like the Blue, may filter small animals out of the water and consume them, the sperm whale is the largest animal that hunts and eats using its teeth.
