European Register of Marine Species - English

The foundation of biodiversity research and management is correctly identifying and naming species. This project will produce a register of marine species in Europe, linked with a bibliography of identification guides, register of taxonomic experts, locations of collections of reference specimens, and an Information Pack on European marine biodiversity (based on this project’s results). The species register is novel in its geographic extent, range of taxa covered, and use of state-of-the-art World Wide Web software for publication and networking.

Nebrodi Mountains were the reign of fawns (as well as deer, bears and roe-bucks), and in fact their name derives from the Greek "Nebros" which means "fawn". They still represent the richest part in Sicily as concerns the fauna, in spite of the progressive impoverishment of the environment. The last wolves were killed at the end of the 1920s and the griffon vultures, which hovered round the Rocche del Crasto, disappeared at the beginning of the 1960s because of the poisoned pieces of food intended for the foxes and scattered over the territory.

The North Atlantic and Arctic Fauna - English

Material for a faunistic investigation of mass occurrences of sponges (Porifera) and the associated fauna along the shelf edge of the North Atlantic has been collected off Norway, the Faroes, Iceland and Greenland, and the samples have been worked up. A project with the title "The northeast Greenland marine benthic fauna - faunistics, systematic composition and zoogeographical relationships" has been initiated. The aim is to provide a faunistic survey of the benthic fauna (0.5 mm) in a high arctic Fjord (Independence Fjord) opening directly into the Polar Sea, and to place the marine benthic fauna off North Greenland in a zoogeographical context by comparison with the fauna in neighbouring areas (A.B. Klitgaard).
