The Dactyloptena orientalis grows up to 16 inches. The Flying Gunard prefers a tank of at least 60 gallons with plenty of places to hide & swim. The Dactyloptena orientalis is a carnivore and likes to eat live foods, including live grass, mysid, brine shrimp, crustaceans, clams.

Habitat et biologie: Poisson benthique habitant les fonds sableux ou vaseux dans les eaux côtières peu profondes et les prairies sous-marines, de 10 à 80 m; capable de "marcher" sur le fond en remuant les pelviennes, tout en utilisant les rayons courts des pectorales pour griffer le sable, probablement à la recherche de nourriture. Dans la littérature, on le cite souvent comme étant capable de sauter hors de l'eau et de planer sur de courtes distances, d'où le nom commun, mais ces rapports sont probablement erronés et les pectorales étalées joueraient un rôle de défense et d'alarme contre les prédateurs.
