This delicate-looking lizard seldom exceeds 3 inches in length, excluding the tail. It has moveable eyelids and large eyes with vertical pupils. The small body scales are granular and soft; the toes are slender. There is a constriction at the base of the otherwise bulky tail.

Aggregation of Ceoleonyx variegatus in diurnal shelter sites is shown to be a statistically valid phenomenon, confirming earlier reports based on subjective impressions. Preliminary data on causative factors suggest that limited burrow availability promoted aggregation. Experiments in which two individuals were placed in cages having an excess of burrows revealed no indication of interindividual attraction. However, these results do not exclude the operation of social factors in aggregation.

Les Geckos rayés du Nicaragua s'élevent a peu près comme les geckos léopards (Eublepharis Macularius) Il est un peu plus petit que celui ci (15 cm). Il ne peut donc pas être nourri avec des bébés souriceaux. L'humidité par contre un peu plus élevée que pour l'eublepharis macularius.

Nocturnal habits; often emits faint squeaks when handled. Very fragile species, handle with care. Some individuals from Riverside and San Bernardino Counties may have spots on their head and their dorsal bands may be more spotted and wider, characteristic of the Desert Banded Gecko (Coleonyx variegatus variegatus).
