This commentary on the Revelation of John, which Bede himself called 'Expositio' instead of the 'Explanatio' of the printed version, is probably the earliest of his scriptural commentaries. According to Laistner, 72 manuscripts are still in existence, with the likelihood of another existing in Melk.

Beda wurde mit sieben Jahren dem Abt des Benediktiner- Klosters in Wearmouth, Benedikt Biskop, zur Erziehung anvertraut. 691 wechselte er in das neugegrьndeten Kloster Jarrow bei Sunderland, das er wohl nie mehr verlassen hat; er wurde Diakon und 703 Priester. Er unterrichtete an der Klosterschule Grammatik, Poetik, Orthografie und Geschichtswissenschaft, die in ihren Methoden heutigen MaЯstдben genьgen kann.

Als dieser 682 das Kloster St. Paul in Jarrow grьndete, siedelte B. mit dem Abt Ceolfrid dorthin ьber und blieb hier bis zu seinem Tod als frommer, bescheidener Klosterbruder, der im Lernen, Lehren und Schreiben seine volle Befriedigung fand und darum nicht nach einem hohen Amt trachtete.
