Erich von Drygalski was born on February 9, 1865 in Kцningsberg, East Prussia. Near the end of the nineteenth century 'Antarctic fever' broke out in western Europe and in 1898 the German South Polar Commission suggested a national expedition to Antarctica. As Professor of Geography and Geophysics at the University of Berlin, Drygalski was certainly qualified and was subsequently chosen to be the leader of the expedition.

Captain Scott called him the "polar gentleman". The two men originally met on the slopes of Mont Ventoux where both were training for the next polar expedition each was to undertake. At this retreat they worked together to develop equipment that would later save the life of Australian Douglas Mawson, some fifteen years later. Jean-Baptiste Charcot was born on July 15, 1867 at Neuilly-sur-Seine, near Paris.

William Speirs Bruce was a young Scotsman when first introduced to the great southern reaches. His introduction came on a British whaling expedition to the Falkland Islands and vicinity in 1892-93. Four ships set forth from Dundee on this pioneering Scottish whaling reconnaissance: the ACTIVE, commanded by Thomas Robertson, the DIANA, commanded by Robert Davidson, the POLAR STAR, commanded by James Davidson, and the BALAENA, commanded by Alexander Fairweather.

The Enderby Brothers were London shipowners who were also interested in Antarctic discovery. They sent out expeditions to the South Atlantic with the dual purpose of seal hunting and exploration. The most important of these was John Biscoe's voyage in 1830-1832.

Those who knew Floyd Bennett well often used words like steady and unspectacular in describing the explorer. They meant these words as testament to the humble quality he displayed despite being regarded as a model aviator. He was also a history-making aviator, though there is evidence that he tried to shrug off the label.

The completion of the great British naval expedition of 1839-43, under the command of James Clark Ross on HMS EREBUS and Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier on HMS TERROR, brought to an end the era of early Antarctic exploration. On the other hand, a significant number of sealing and whaling voyages were undertaken by a variety of nations in the years leading up to the end of the century. The majority of these subsequent sailings originated from New England in the United States and from France.

1867–1936, French neurologist and explorer in the antarctic region; son of Jean Martin Charcot. He became (1896) director of clinics at the Univ. of Paris but soon gave up medicine for exploration. In two voyages (1903–7, 1908–10) he surveyed the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, obtaining valuable scientific data.

1866–1934, Belgian naval officer and explorer. Sailing with Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen who would later be the first to reach the South Pole, Gerlache led a scientific expedition to Antarctica in 1897–99. During the expedition his ship became trapped in ice for more than a year. Gerlache planned and executed many other scientific expeditions throughout the world, including the Persian Gulf and the Arctic.

New Zealand mountain climber and explorer. He went on many mountain-climbing expeditions before 1953, when he and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal were the first people to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. He was later knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. In 1958, leading a five-person group by dog sled and snow tractor across 1,200 mi (1,931 km) of Antarctica to the South Pole, he became part of the first group since 1912 to reach the Pole by overland route.
