This Internet project was developed in connection with the exhibit of the same name which was held in the House of World Cultures (Berlin, Germany) in 1999, and offers an informative picture of the life and work of the scientist Alexander von Humboldt. His student days, his voyages and his influence on into the present are illustrated with pictures, texts and sounds.

Of Prussian nobility and educated in Frankfurt and Göttingen, Humboldt studied natural history and geology, travelling widely in Europe before securing a position in the Academy of Mines in Freiburg in 1792. Inheriting the family fortune after his mother's death in 1796, Humboldt moved to Paris where he met Bonpland and formulated plans to explore in Spanish America. Through Baron Forell, Ambassador of Saxony, Humboldt and Bonpland were introduced to King Carlos IV and received permission to explore Mexico and South America at their own expense.

Alexander von Humboldt was a German naturalist. He is best known for his explorations of Central and South America. In addition to his extensive naturalist excursions, Humboldt did research in many other fields, such as forestry, astronomy, chemistry and mineralogy. He was also a diplomat to European courts. Humboldt published a great deal about his discoveries.

Von Humboldt was a German naturalist and explorer who was a major figure in the classical period of physical geography and biogeography, areas of science now included in the earth sciences and ecology. With his book Kosmos he made a valuable contribution to the popularization of science.

Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón (1475-1526) was a Spanish conquistador and explorer who tried to start a colony in North America in 1526. He was the first European colonizer of what is now South Carolina. His attempt to settle the coast of the Carolinas (near the mouth of the Peedee River at Winyah Bay) was unsuccessful.

Father Eusebio Francisco Kino, S. J., (Aug. 10, 1645 - March 15, 1711) was a Jesuit priest, missionary, explorer, map-maker, mathematician, and astronomer. Kino was a missionary who founded many missions and explored areas in southwestern North America (Pimería Alta), including areas in what are now northern Sonora (Mexico), southern California (USA) and southern Arizona (USA).

Baron Alexander von Humboldt (September 14, 1769-May 6, 1859) was a Prussian naturalist and explorer who explored much of Central and South America. Humboldt and his friend, the French medical doctor/botanist Aime-Jacques-Alexandre Goujoud Bonpland (1773-1858), explored the coast of Venezuela, the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, and much of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico (1799-1805).

H. unternimmt Exkursionsreisen in europäische Länder. 1790/91 studiert er an der Handelsakademie in Hamburg und der Bergakademie in Freiberg. 1792 wird Humboldt in Berlin zum Assessor im preußischen Bergdepartement ernannt. Nicht zuletzt sein allgemeines naturwissenschaftliches Interesse veranlasst A. v. Humboldt zum Austritt aus dem Staatsdienst.
