Volendo stilare una graduatoria d’importanza dei concetti proposti da Freud nel corso della sua elaborazione, transfert occuperebbe il primo posto. Se ci si spinge un po’ oltre il luogo comune che lo descrive in termini romantici come affaire sentimentale tra analizzante e analista, ci si accorge che esso viene impiegato già nell’Interpretazione dei sogni per indicare il lavoro di condensazione e spostamento cui sono sottoposte le immagini oniriche.

Jacques Lacan: "In his discussion of the absolute division between the unconscious and the consciousness (or between id and ego), Freud introduces the idea of the human self, or subject, as radically split, divided between these two realms of conscious and unconscious. On the one hand, our usual (Western humanist) ideas of self or personhood are defined by operations of consciousness, including rationality, free will, and self-reflection. For Freud and for psychoanalysis in general, however, actions, thought, belief, and the concepts of "self" are all determined or shaped by the unconscious, and its drives and desires."
