Perhaps the most vigorous and versatile vernacular writer of the 16th century Aretino rejected the family name of his wastrel cobbler father and preferred to be known as Pietro 'of Arezzo' (his birthplace). It is doubtful whether he received any formal education. However, thanks to contacts derived from an aristocratic 'protector' of his attractive bourgeoise mother, he was much in the company of cultivated men, especially during a formative period of his life spent in Perugia (before 1510-17).

His derisive wit was so feared that the gifts of those who sought either to buy him or buy him off made him very wealthy. He was a friend of Titian, who painted his portrait. His comedies, such as La cortigiana and La talenta, are singular, if exaggerated, portraits of his time.

Nato ad Arezzo nel 1492, Pietro Aretino non si denominò mai col suo patronimico (del padre Luca, un calzolaio, sappiamo ben poco) ma sempre col nome della sua città. Della sua infanzia quasi nulla è noto, ma si sa che nell'adolescenza visse e a Perugia sia per frequentare l'università sia per studiare pittura, e come pittore si firmò per qualche tempo.
