Íàñåëÿþò ðàçíîîáðàçíûå ëàíäøàôòû îò ïóñòûíü äî ëèñòâåííûõ ëåñîâ, íå èçáåãàÿ àíòðîïîãåííûõ óãîäèé; â ãîðàõ äî 3100 ì íàä óðîâíåì ìîðÿ. Íàñåêîìîÿäíû, îõîòÿòñÿ îáû÷íî íà áîëüøîé âûñîòå, ïîëåò ñòðåìèòåëüíûé.  ïîëåòå èçäàþò ñëàáî ÷àñòîòíî-ìîäóëèðîâàííûå ýõîëîêàöèîííûå ñèãíàëû î÷åíü âûñîêîé èíòåíñèâíîñòè. Óáåæèùà – ïåùåðû, ñêàëüíûå òðåùèíû, îáøèâêà êðûø ÷åëîâå÷åñêèõ ïîñòðîåê, äóïëà è ò. ï. Îáðàçóþò êîëîíèè îò íåñêîëüêèõ äåñÿòêîâ äî ìíîãèõ òûñÿ÷ îñîáåé.

The Brazilian free-tailed bat is found throughout California. Mostly absent from high Sierra Nevada (from Tehama to Tulare cos.) and the north coastal region (from Del Norte and Siskiyou cos. to northern Sonoma Co). This species is common in California and may be locally abundant.
