The islands were named in honour of Captain James Cook, who in 1733 became the first European to sight them. However, credit for the first discovery of these islands must go to the Polynesians who discovered them during their great migratory journeys of the 7th and 8th centuries.

The Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana was the first European to sight one of the islands in the group - Pukapuka - in 1595. There is no record of further European contact for over 150 years, until Captain James Cook explored much of the group during his expeditions of 1773 and 1777.
